What is the purpose of a tree guard?

If you have a tree or trees that you want to protect from equipment damage, pests, animals, insects, or the winter than a tree guard is what you are in need of. There are a wide variety of tree guards available that you can purchase to provide maximum protection from the type of damage your tree is experiencing. However, different tree guards are more effective against different types of damage. We explain the varieties of tree guards and what protection benefits that they provide.

Plastic tree guards.

Plastic tree guards are one of the less expensive, easier installation tree guards available. They normally have a 'latch' that snaps them firmly against the base of the tree and provide optimal protection from animals and pests. They are available at almost all out door / garden shops and come in different shapes and sizes. The downfall of the plastic base guards is that they do not provide much protection from mother nature - if any protection at all.

Spiral tree guards.

The spiral tree guards are fairly similar to the plastic tree guards available. Instead of being 'snapped' into place, however, they are normally wrapped around the base of the tree. Similiar to a thick wrapping paper. They are taller in height than a plastic base guard, and provide the same type of protection. They are weak against mother nature but provide better protection against taller animals, and the protection is the same as the plastic base guard against pests.

Paper Wrap tree guards.

Paper wrap tree guards are not a flimsy, tissue paper substance that you might think of off the top of your head. They are a heavy, commercial paper wrap that provide decent protection from mother nature and insects. They are designed to protect the base of the tree and the root systems from cold weather and icy conditions. In most cases, paper wrap tree guards are infused with an eco-friendly chemical that repels insects and pests.

Burlap Tree Guards.

Burlap has been used for generations as a tree guard method. However, while not providing the tree with ample protection in extreme weather conditions, burlap does a decent job at adding additional warmth protection to the base and root systems. Burlap has also be known to irritate the nose of certain insects and pests thus adding to its ability to aid in protection for the base of the tree.

Field Tile tree guards.

Some people find metal tree guards decorative. And that is almost the only reason to use them. They are not effective against mother nature, however is designed properly they can be effective against smaller rodents and pests. They do not provide ample protection for inserts as well.

Metal tree guards.

Pruning your young walnut is a very important step. Spring is the ideal time for pruning. You really should set some time aside to spend pruning your new tree. Spring pruning will help to allow the tree spend time and energy developing new branches and blossoms instead of trying to revive un restorable dead limbs. If you forget to prune during the spring, fall is your next best option. A fall pruning will help the tree become dormant for the winter months ahead.
